Why does language change? For instance, why does the Great Vowel Shift bring about a shift from /e:/ to /i:/, or why did "be like" spread in American English? From a sociolinguistic point of view, the answer is clear: Diachronic language change happens as a consequence of synchronic language variation, i.e. because of one social group preferring a linguistic form over another.

This class is an introduction to the study of language change from a sociolinguistic point of view.

In the first half of the semester, we will deal with the following questions:
(a) How can we study language change? For instance, changes can be tracked either by comparing data from different times (the "real-time approach"), or by comparing the language of old and young people at the same point in time (the "apparent-time approach").
(b) What are key areas of language change in English? We will cover vowel shifts in the 13. and 20. centuries, morphological change in the Early Modern Period and syntactic change in the 20th century.
(c) What are the principles of language change? For instance, language change may originate in the dominant social class or in working-class dialects. Or, language change can be caused by both language-internal or external, social factors.

The second half of the term will be dedicated to developing research questions for your own study of a phenomenon of language change. Requirements: Presentation and term paper (4,000 words) 

The class will be complemented by the seminar "Empirical Approaches to Linguistic Variation", in which we will develop a structural template for sociolinguistic studies and practise corpus-linguistic and basic statistical methods. Please note that you will need to bring your own computer to class.
