As no one finds it difficult to break up a verb like "readable" into "read" and -"able", English word-formation appears to be a straightforward, regular system at first sight. If you look more closely, though, there are many pitfalls. Why does "capable" exist, even though "cap"- on its own does not? Why can you "undelete" a file, while is highly unlikely that you will *"unown" one? Why can a "moral philosopher" be a quite immoral person? Why can the -"iv(e)" be followed by -"ise" ("activise", "collectivise"), while the reverse order is not found (*"generalisive", *"specialisive")?

The first part of this class will provide a hands-on, accessible introduction to English morphology. In the second half of term, we will focus on cognitive morphology, a recent, innovative approach to this field, which provides elegant answers to many of the problems outlined above. Requirements: Short presentation, oral exam (20 minutes).

Recommended advance reading: Schmid, H.-J. (2016): English Morphology and Word-Formation: An Introduction, 3rd rev. and transl. ed. Berlin: Schmidt.

Please note: The seminar is complemented by the class "Phonetics and Phonology", which will provide insights into the pronunciation of English and train the skill of phonemic transcription.
