This seminar takes its cue from the contemporary renaissance of space exploration spurred by private actors such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and the discussion of how this renaissance relates to the ever-intensifying anthropogenic polycrisis – climate change, resource scarcity, over-/underpopulation, extractivist colonialism, species extinction, etc.
Our course will particularly focus on how in the North American context, this renaissance of space exploration is particularly connected to imaginaries of planetary abandonment – in other words, with stories of leaving behind the Earth and its terrestrial limitations for an allegedly liberating future for humanity in space. We will discuss how such stories negotiate human entanglement with the web of life on Earth, our conception of the human as such, and the impact of technoliberal discourses (longtermism, technological progress etc.) on such imaginaries.

Readings will include science fiction narratives and film, such as Samantha Harvey’s -Orbital-, Richard Power’s -Bewilderment-, Duncan Jones’ -Moon-, as well as digital and other non-textual media.

Bemerkung:
Please note: the class will include a field trip for the photo exhibition “An Infinitely Dark Legacy” at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz in January (detailed information about the field trip will be shared in the first session of class). Prior knowledge of “NewSpace,” astroculture or the abovementioned texts is not required—just curiosity about how the idea of leaving the planet intersects with North American culture, politics, and imagination.
