Inhalte/Themen:	Since roughly the late 1960s and particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, the so-called ‘performative turn’ in literary and cultural studies and artistic practice heavily influenced the aesthetic and formal development of American drama. Nowadays, however, scholars increasingly engage in what has been termed a “narrative turn” in twenty-first century drama, theater, and performance. This seminar engages in this newly forming field of artistic practice and research: what does it mean to describe theater as ‘narrative’? How does it relate to other concepts like ‘dramatic’ and ‘performative’? What are its traditions and theoretical premisses? What (new) forms of cultural representation do narrative strategies in drama enable and aim at? We will selectively trace the development of this theater aesthetic from modern European and American drama in the early 1920s onwards (Brecht’s Epic Theater; Thornton Wilder). We will then study the impact of narrative aesthetics, strategies, and models of theatrical representation on the contemporary stage in selected works by canonical and experimental playwrights (including Tony Kushner’s -Angels in America- or Matthew Lopez’s -The Inheritance-) and across a spectrum of theories and genres (political drama, documentary drama, Black theater). The aim is to address how the narrative mode allows playwrights to engage in questions of genre, dramaturgical technique, spectatorship, and politics. If feasible, the seminar may offer a theater trip to Munich to see Matthew Lopez’s -The Inheritance- (depending on performance schedules etc.).
