Talking about films is usually inherently cool and fun – often even in a university context. This class also seeks to live up to that idea, while at the same time teaching you how to view and “read” films critically through the means of film analysis, film history and their cultural historical context. For this purpose, the class will track US film from (roughly) the 1970s to the present in terms of the history of film directing and production, the evolution of filmic genres, and the changing roles of film as a medium of cultural representation. The class will cover “New Hollywood” and the idea of the filmic “auteur” in the US, the rise and development of independent film, the emergence of Black and Indigenous film, and the overall growing diversification of the filmic industry.
Films may include, but are not limited to: Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese), The Shining (Stanley Kubrick), Blade Runner (Ridley Scott), Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee), Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch), Fargo (Joel/Ethan Coen), Smoke Signals (Chris Eyre), Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola), Mulholland Drive (David Lynch), Get Out (Jordan Peele), Black Panther (Ryan Coogler), Nomadland (Chloé Zhao),….
Screenings of the films are not part of the regular class sessions and will be offered in cooperation with the “Fachgruppe Anglistik/Amerikanistik”, time and place to be determined.
