Inhalte/Themen:	In this course we are going to explore the connection between history/histories and fiction, looking at the ways that contemporary Canadian novels and short stories engage with the past and historical events. Are past events merely retold from varying perspectives, interwoven with personal histories or spiked with historical documents and images? The texts we are going to examine have found their own way of dealing with the past, either using realistic modes to decipher Canada’s legacy or questioning the very way of writing Canadian history through their narrations, formats, and plots. What happens, for instance, when a fictional story follows five Indigenous teenagers through their post-Residential School traumata? Which histories are revealed in a novel when a “celebrated murderess” narrates her own story to the men who analyze her life and how much of her tale can we trust? And how does the perspective of immigrants influence the idea of Toronto? To examine these fictional narratives of Canada’s past we will consider theories of historiography (the writing of history) as well as postmodern narrative practices that question the authority of written texts and historical narratives in their focus on narrating the story (Linda Hutcheon’s “Historiographic Metafiction”). These considerations will further lead us to questions of feminism, Indigenous rights and reconciliation, as well as Canada’s approach to multiculturalism.
