The “Leviathan” is one of deepest and most influential books in the history of philosophy. In it is contained the core of the ethical legitimation of government in the modern state. Here, for the first time ever, individual rights are postulated as the source of the validity of civil laws. This idea lies at the heart of modern conceptions of human rights and human dignity. However, “natural right” in Hobbes’ system is not at all to be identified with what we nowadays refer to as “human rights”. For Hobbes, natural right is a right “to everything”; a right which must be surrendered by everyone in order to enter into the social contract that constitutes the political order. In an absolutely original way Hobbes interprets the origin of the state as a collective action by which the state of nature (status naturalis), the uncivilized chaos of enmity and egoism, is turned into the civic/civil state (status civilis). This system of civil laws thereby becomes the expression of the law of nature (lex naturalis), the unwritten core of a just and humane political order. The whole second half of the “Leviathan” is dedicated to a model of political theology which explicates the law of nature as divine law (lex divina): the law of God which is the metaphysical foundation of the human society. A deeper analysis of this political theology can reveal that the figure of the deus mortalis, the mortal God, which Hobbes ascribes to the Leviathan, can be seen in the light of the classical idea of Jesus Christ as a composite person (persona composita), a person with a divine and likewise a human nature.
