Pausanias lived in the II century A.D., in the period between the age of Hadrian and that of Marcus Aurelius. He was a traveler and a writer, a Greek writer in the Roman Empire. He came from western Asia Minor and traveled all around Greece. His Descritpion of Greece is a detailed guide in 10 books, each of which is dedicated to a Greek region. The author seeks to take the reader on an imaginary tour, describing everything along the way that he considers worth seeing and recording. He gives a large amount of information on cities and monuments as well as on historical facts and ethnographic aspects following a topographical line in a way similar to modern tourist guides: geography is the framework in which historical and etnographical information are provided. A number of passages will be read in English translation and discussed during the course in order to shed light on the most relevant topics of the work of Pausanias
