In this course, we will explore the city of New Orleans in literature and film. As an important maritime port situated in the vicinity of the Gulf of Mexico with access to the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean, New Orleans is a culturally diverse place historically marked by creolization, slavery, and natural disasters. Together, we will investigate literary and audiovisual representations of New Orleans across a variety of genres. We will discuss documentaries, novels, short fiction, poetry, TV series and plays that showcase the cultural imaginaries revolving around the city as a culturally vibrant place (music, food, Mardi Gras), as marked by catastrophic events such as hurricane Katrina, and as a site of remembrance for the transatlantic slave trade. Our investigations will be informed by a variety of contemporary theoretical perspectives on literature, film, and performance, as well as racialization, gender, and class.

Rebecca Solnit and Rebecca Snedeker’s -Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas- (2013) will accompany us throughout the semester, so I highly recommend to procure your personal copy of this required reading before our first session.

Among others, works we will watch and read include: Kate Chopin’s novel -The Awakening- (1899), Tennessee Williams’s play -A Streetcar Named Desire- (1948), the TV series -Treme- by David Simon and George Pelecanos (2010-2013), and Spike Lee’s film -When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts- (2006).
