Content/topics:
It is generally agreed that the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) has been the most significant event in the modern history of the Church. Through this council, the Church has redefined her role in the modern world and decided to actively engage with it instead of condemning it. As a result, the impacts of Vatican II cannot be limited to within the Church. In this course, we will start looking at the Vatican II mainly (but not exclusively) as an event in European History by examining the various aspects of its impacts in light of the intellectual and moral values cherished by European culture: such as human dignity, religious freedom, pluralism, democracy, and hope for universalism. Towards the end of the course, we hope to widen the scope by considering the impacts of Vatican II in non-European contexts, because Vatican II marked the emergence of the Catholic Church a “world-church,” as Karl Rainer said. Throughout the course, we will try to explore the dynamic interactions between the Christian and the so-called secular values, by discussing some of the official conciliar documents, theological texts written by the major theologians, as well as some relevant secondary sources.
