The broadening and at times subversion of the typical white and masculinist conventions of science-fiction has led to creating greater representation of diversity in the genre, thereby addressing issues of either previously marginalized or excluded groups in popular imaginaries of the future. Similarly, writers and filmmakers whose work does not fully conform to the popular conventions of science-fiction and fantasy are making use of these genres to create futuristic imaginaries that center questions of gender, race, and indigeneity. This has led to the rise and development of two distinct kinds of futurism, namely Afrofuturism and Indigenous futurism, as well as the broader category of speculative fiction, which are areas this course will focus on. The course will examine how ideas of the future or the futuristic are addressed in the works under discussion, how different media and genres are used to articulate discourses of the futuristic and speculative, and how working with elements of the futuristic and speculative opens new spaces of representation for groups that were regularly excluded from how the future used to be imagined. Writers and filmmakers to be discussed may include Nnedi Okorafor, N.K Jemisin, Chelsea Vowel, Drew Hayden Taylor, and Ryan Coogler.
