In Mary Shelley’s novel, Victor Frankenstein creates—in Ingolstadt, of all places—a creature that he later loses control of. In light of today’s AI systems, the question of responsibility for what we create arises once again.
This course introduces students to central questions in AI ethics. Why do seemingly neutral algorithms reproduce societal biases? How can responsibility be attributed when decision-making processes are barely traceable? Whose knowledge is missing from the data used to train AI systems, and who does the invisible work behind the scenes? The course also addresses the topics of privacy and surveillance, the future of work, sustainability, and existential risks, each in relation to current case studies.
