Content/topics:
Graphic novels are increasingly important media for marginalized people to tell their own (hi)stories, to see themselves represented in popular culture, to offer alternative visions for the future, and work through traumatic experiences. In the seminar, we will read a selection of graphic novels, including excerpts from -Paying the Land- by Joe Sacco, -“Québec Was Born in My Country!”- by Emanuelle Dufour, and -The Talk- by Darrin Bell. Next to these visual narratives, we will also read autobiographical non-fiction such as -Rehearsals for Living- by Robyn Maynard and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. Our primary readings will be accompanied by theories of graphic memoirs and documentary comics as well as theories from Black and Indigenous Studies. We will consider how visuality, orality, and the positionality of the author/artist come into play. Please purchase either an e-book version or a physical copy of -The Talk- by Darrin Bell. All other readings will be made available on ILIAS at the beginning of the term.
