Content/topics:
In popular culture, such as TV series, films, and novels, the US-American university is a portrayed not just as a site of higher education or as an academic institution, but as a self-contained ecosystem. This stylized version of campus life has popularized the university as a transnational short-hand for youth culture, liberal values and freedom. This popular imagination is, however, undercut by how the university is currently actually an embattled site of negotiation for conservative projections of moral failure, neoliberal fantasies of learning, for hierarchies of racial discrimination , anti-gender politics, and tech-elitism.
Our class will take a closer look into some of these discourses as they are negotiated across different media (film, graphic novel, short videos, podcasts) and discuss the theorization of the university as a site of meaning making by critics such as Adrian Daub, Fred Moten and Sarah Ahmed.
Starting on November 24th, the class includes 5 regular sessions (Tuesdays, 16-18h), a longer session (Tuesday, January 26th, 9-12h) and a special event (February 10th - 12th). Students enrolled will receive a more detailed syllabus and a list of requirements.
