Inhalte/Themen:	Indigenous futurisms ask us to engage with Indigenous knowledges and practices of relating differently to the land and human and non-human agents. They offer visions of the future that are less extractive and counteract the settler colonial present, reconfiguring notions of the urban, progress, and sustainability. Indeed, Indigenous understandings of place consider it through a web of reciprocal relations and responsibilities. In the seminar “Place in Indigenous Futurisms,” we will read the novel -Moon of the Turning Leaves- by Waubgeshig Rice (Anishinaabe) alongside Indigenous-authored short stories and comics. The range of different media reflects the multimodality of the genre and movement as well as the centrality of orality for Indigenous stories. Our primary readings will be accompanied by theories of Indigenous futurisms, Indigenous literatures, and storytelling. Whereas land and waters are at the core of most Indigenous theories and practices, we will consider how futurist narratives in outer space are similarly place-based. Other themes we will look at include queer/Two-Spirit Indigenous visions of the future and the role of technologies. We will situate our readings in both a historical and current political context of Turtle Island (Canada and the United States).
