Inhalte/Themen:	In most American literary histories, the short story still holds a special place and has oftentimes been named the quintessential American genre. A lot of this has to do with how the genre we now recognize as the short story has been developed in significant ways in the 19th century at the same time in which American literature strove to be a national literature in its own right. Beyond that, the genre of the American short story has also offered itself as a literary form for writers so as to explore many different genres of writing – realist, experimental, fantastic, science-fiction, crime – all of which can be regarded as making up multiple histories of those genres within the realm of American short fiction. This course wants to trace some of these histories from the 19th to the 21st century and wants to ask what we can learn about the literary and cultural histories of the US by doing so. What can non-realist short stories accomplish that realist cannot and vice versa? How has the portrayal of US society shifted in these various genres of the short story and where can we find continuities? How have the voices within US short fiction expanded over time, and how has the short story always been a diverse genre? The course is designed to provide you with an overview of the manifold histories and genres of the American short story and train you in how to read them as well as talk and write about them. We will explore writers ranging from Edgar Allan Poe to Stephen Graham Jones, from Herman Melville to Octavia Butler and from Kate Chopin to Thomas Pynchon and Carmen Maria Machado.
