Inhalte/Themen:	This class focuses on historical developments and different forms of the American short story from the nineteenth century to the present. It will help to provide you with an idea of how the short story developed and manifested itself in the periods of Romanticism, Modernism, Realism, the Postwar period to Postmodernism, and the present. In addition, we will explore how the short story used forms of representation ranging from realism to the gothic and horror as well as the speculative and science-fiction. In all of these forms, the short story has portrayed social issues, tensions, and conflicts in the U.S. – including those revolving around race, gender, and sexuality – and in our discussions, we will address these as well. Through a selection of short stories ranging from Edgar Allen Poe to Carmen Maria Machado and Nathaniel Hawthorne to N.K. Jemisin, the course is designed to provide you with an overview of the historical developments and forms of the American short story and, building on the analytical knowledge and skills acquired in the Introductory course, train you in how to read them as well as discuss them in class – which also serves as preparation for the final oral exam.
