Inhalte/Themen:	American poetry has played an important part in all major literary movements in the U.S., from Transcendentalism and Romanticism to Modernism, the Postwar period to Postmodernism, and the present. With this in mind, this class will focus on reading selected poets to explore and better understand the forms, innovations, and ideas of these particular moments in the literary and cultural history of the U.S. In addition, poetry gives voice to marginalized and underrepresented communities as well as helps to raise issues of race, gender, sexuality, which we will also focus on in our discussions. The Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Poetry movement, the Native American Renaissance/Resurgence, and the Black Lives Matter movement are some of the cultural moments we will focus on to do that. Through a selection of poetry from Walt Whitman to Claudia Rankine, and Emily Dickinson to Natalie Diaz, the course is designed to provide you with an overview of the historical developments and forms of American poetry and, building on the analytical knowledge and skills acquired in the Introductory course, train you in how to read them as well as discuss them in class – which also serves as preparation for the final oral exam.
