Inhalte/Themen:	Several American plays have been successfully turned into films. We will focus on three of these: Tennesse Williams’ -A Streetcar Named Desire- (1947), Edward Albee’ -Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf- (1962) and Tony Kushner’s -Angels in America- (1991). In addition to analyzing the plays for their formal features, thematic occupations, and literary-historical contexts, we will examine the films (and in Kushner’s case the HBO event-movie/mini-series) that have become canonical as filmic productions in their own right and were influential for the performance histories of the respective plays. Through analyzing the plays, the class will give you insight into the Post-War era of Broadway Theater, the more experimental drama of the 1960s and the Postmodern Drama of the late twentieth century, with the films providing a perspective on the Classical Hollywood Period, New Hollywood of the 1960s, and 21st century film/tv productions. Working with drama and film analysis, the aim of the class is not so much to compare the original play to the film, but to see the film as one possible performance of the play and to examine how it uses specific filmic techniques to put a dramatic work on the screen.

Tennesse Williams’ -A Streetcar Named Desire- (Penguin), Edward Albee’ -Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf- (Vintage) and Tony Kushner’s -Angels in America- (NHB). The films/TV series are available to stream and possible screenings to accompany the class will be announced.
