This class focusses on the literary periods of American realism and naturalism, situated roughly between 1865 (end of the Civil War) and 1914 (beginning of World War I), while also being interested in the interaction between literature and forms of visual arts in this time. In a turn away from the Romantic emphasis on imagination and idealism, American literature in this period turned to focus on the visible, the empirically verifiable and, connected to that, the aesthetics of the everyday. Realism further emphasized the position of the individual in relation to society and asked about the conflicts individuals have with larger societal forces and how these might be resolved. Naturalism, in turn, challenged some and radicalized other aspects of Realism by emphasizing how individuals are controlled by forces beyond their control, whether these are social or rooted in human nature; this was aligned with a stronger focus on the life of lower social classes at this time. Major historical changes and developments from the end of enslavement to Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow era, the women’s rights movement, the assimilation era of American Indian policy by the U.S., and the growing social inequality in the “Gilded Age” shaped this period and are reflected and negotiated in Realistic and Naturalistic literature – and we will focus on these aspects in our discussion as well. Doing so, the course will turn a diverse selection of Realist and Naturalist writing and visual arts and co2nclude with the writing of a term paper for which we will also prepare during the course.
