Inhalte/Themen:	When the director David Lynch passed away this January, a wide variety of tributes highlighted his special and unique status within American film history. Influenced by European art cinema, Lynch merged surrealism with American cinema and TV and created his very own brand of filmmaking that painted the U.S. as a dreamscape and a place of nightmares. Many of Lynch’s films are known for their enigmatic nature, their exploration of darker aspects of the human psyche, and for spotlighting the strange in the seemingly normal, and the abnormal in the apparently routine – a feature of uncanny defamiliarization that became known as “Lynchian.” While a number of Lynch’s films might be difficult to explain with the familiar rational and linear logic of narrative, that does not mean they cannot be understood – both on their own terms as multifaceted filmic works of art and as dialogues with different histories of American cinema and culture. The course will thus look at selected films of David Lynch as a lens to approach moments and trajectories of American cinematic history, and vice versa, to pair films in American history with works of David Lynch to better grasp them in their film historical context. At the same time, we will use the films by David Lynch as a test case to decode and explore through film analysis the evolving style of one director, especially as Lynch’s films transport as much through the image and sound as through narrative. The films discussed will include -Laura- and -Blue Velvet-, -The Wizard of Oz- and -Wild at Heart-, -Out of the Past- and -Lost Highway-, -Sunset Boulevard- and -Mullholland Drive-.
