Inhalte/Themen:	This class focusses on the development of American Drama from the beginning of the 20th century to today – a starting point chosen for being the moment in which playwrighting in the United States developed fully into an art form that sought to merge critical acclaim and commercial success, with modern European drama being a major source of influence. In the course, you will learn about the beginnings of modern American drama and the Little Theater movement, the first Golden Age of Broadway in the 1920s, the focus on socially critical plays in the 1930s in the Great Depression, the flourishing of the second Golden Age of Broadway in the 1950s and the subsequent developments toward the more experimental forms of Off-Broadway drama, Postmodernist drama, and a greater diversification of drama and theater that still characterizes the dramatic landscape of the US today. In its various versions, American drama has offered a stage to present and debate issues of class, gender, race, sexuality, and further social issues – and these will feature in our discussions as well. Through a diverse selection of plays, the course is designed to provide you with an overview of the historical developments and forms of American drama and, building on the analytical knowledge and skills acquired in the Introductory course, train you in how to read them as well as discuss them in class – which also serves as preparation for the final oral exam.
