Inhalte/Themen:	This seminar focuses on the literary and cultural negotiation of fascism in the North American context. Our course takes its cue from current debates about the rise of new forms of fascist ideology (post-fascism, postmodern fascism, neo-fascism, tech-fascism etc.) across the globe, and particularly as part of the violent transformation of the US-American state into an authoritarian system under the Trump administration, and looks at the ways in which these new fascist ideologies and its predecessors are negotiated in North American literature and culture.

Literatur:	Our class will pay particular attention to how fascism in the North American context is deeply entangled with discourses of white supremacy, Evangelical patriarchy and technoliberal eugenics. Readings will include novels, such as Philip Roth’s -The Plot Against America-, Margaret Atwood, -The Handmaid’s Tale-, Octavia Butler’s -Parable of the Sower-, and a variety of digital and visual media connected to Silicon Valley tech-bro fascism.

Bemerkung:

Please note: the class will include a field trip for the photo exhibition “An Infinitely Dark Legacy” at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz in January (detailed information about the field trip will be shared in the first session of class). No prior knowledge of fascist discourse or the abovementioned texts is required—just curiosity about how fascism intersects with North American culture, politics, and imagination.
