competencies/skills
:
- Students get familiar with industry specific operations management topics and to structure a practical problem and to present it. Basics of project management, team works and presentation skills are part of the course.
- Students learn to use and apply conceptual parts of SCM in the industry and understand appropriately and critically basic models and approaches, which are applied in consumer goods and retail. It is necessary to understand the opportunities and limits in the practical context.
- Students develop a common understanding of logistics and overarching relations of enterprise functions from a logistical perspective.
- Working sessions with presentations from the students will train and develop these competences. Within the working session students present their cases studies and discuss them within the group. Therefore, these meetings are obligatory.
course content/topics
:
- The course covers decision-oriented aspects of SCM and discusses basic concepts, models, and methods of supply chain planning in retail.
- Core is to get familiar with current industry problems and trends in the SCM practice in the context of consumer goods industry and retailing. The course contents are taught by a combination of lectures and case studies.

"Operations and Information Management" as well as "Production Management" or " Logistics: Inventory and Transportation Management" is compulsory

- Because of the competence orientated course format a combination of a written exam, case study work with a term paper and final presentations as well as active participation is necessary.
- Written exam: 20 minutes written exam on lectures, recommended readings, and case studies
- Final presentation: Preparation of final presentation in teams with presentation and discussion (30 + 15 min). The report can be provided as slide-based summary of the presentation. Grading is based on report (75%) as well as presentation and discussion (25%) with the following structure:
- Description of the conceptual planning problem
- Development and illustration of a solution method/model
- Implementation/Evaluation in the context of the retail industry
- Final paper: Preparation and summary of the case study in team in a final paper (5 pages per team member)
- Summary of contents
- Description of core developments and implementation of the concept
- Critical assessment of results
