Content/topics:
In this course, we will examine the many faces of American modernist poetry and explore revolutionary literary and aesthetic trends in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century: from influential precursors (Walt Whitman) to the high modernism of Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn B. Bennett), and the Beat Generation’s late modernism. What were the cultural, literary, and historical contexts that fueled these multi-faceted attempts at ‘making it new’? How do modernist forms capture and engage with social and economic changes in American society? We will explore modernist literary and cultural perspectives on industrialization, cosmopolitanism, segregation, and gender roles. We will seek to understand modern concerns with new perspectives on human subjectivity and experience. And we will discuss the interconnections and aesthetic influences between art, literary manifestos and modernist poetry.
