Content/topics:
This seminar is to provide students with a general introduction to the long and varied history of philosophical speculation, both East and West, upon the nature of time and its remembrance. The seminar will contrast ancient and traditional cyclical conceptions of time and eternity, in addition to the eidetic conception of history productive of the same that sees the latter pessimistically as tending towards dissolution and destruction, with modern, linear conceptions of temporality which optimistically regard history as evolutive and progressive. Fundamental to the modern conception of time and its particular historical eidos will be demonstrated to be grounded in the emergence of the Judeo-Christian Messianic conception of time, particularly in respect of the theological interpretation of the Incarnation as heralding the sanctification of temporality and indicative of the presence of an ‘eternal now’ that does not stand outside our reality, but interpenetrates it.
