At the end of the 19th century, the invention of the phonograph set in motion a new development within the literary field: Poets and novelists recognized the potential of audio media and started recording readings of their texts. This development gained a new dynamic after WWII when recording equipment became cheaper and widely available. The first commercial labels for audio literature like Caedmon Records or Spoken Arts were founded, while avant-garde poets, e.g. the beat generation or the New York school, began to explore the aesthetic possibilities of the tape recorder. Against the backdrop of an increasing cultural influence of popular music and the surveillance culture of the Cold War, we will explore the cultural meanings of audio media and poetry readings in the seminar. Media and literary theories will provide us with the tools to approach the different projects of the postwar era. The focus of the seminar will be the vibrant New York poetry scene of the 1960s and -70s where artists, musicians and poets sought to create new poetry formats off the printed page. We will listen to recordings of Amiri Baraka, Hannah Weiner, John Giorno, Allen Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayer and many other avant-gardist poets, while also considering the careers of poet-musicians like punk icons Patti Smith and Richard Hell. We will compare these recordings with the program of commercial spoken word labels which recorded more canonized authors like Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot or Dylan Thomas. Key questions will be: In what contexts did poets record their poetry? How can we differentiate between commercial and avantgarde recordings? Why were particular texts and poets selected for audio recordings? In what ways can we listen to audio literature?
