Detroit has sadly, and perhaps unfairly, become the synonym for the destruction of North American cities in the recent past. Coffee-table books with high-quality prints of urban decay dominate contemporary documentary representations of the city. In this class, we will trace the history of documentary photography from early experiments by Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine through Walker Evans and James Agee's epochal -Let Us Now Praise Famous Men- to more recent work by acclaimed photographers Edward Burtynsky, Stan Douglas, Andrew Moore, Richard Misrach and several others.

This class also serves as an introduction to the study of photography. We will analyze selected documentary photographs with special attention to the cultural contexts of their production and their aesthetic significance for the history of the genre. Classic essays on photography as well as contemporary theoretical works will feed into our discussion as well.

Students in this class should have a pronounced interest in visual culture studies and be willing to read a fair amount of theoretical work as well as be prepared to do independent research on the topic.
