“Few cities have inspired as much great writing as New York, or indeed as much writing: The literature of the city is extraordinary for its variety and sheer volume,” writes Phillip Lopate in his introduction to the literary anthology -Writing New York.- To many, their fascination with New York is grounded in the city’s cultural and ethnic diversity; some are drawn to the ambivalent promises the city seems to offer: stories of success, freedom and prosperity, while others explore the uniqueness of New York City as a distinctly urban space. In this seminar, we will read and discuss New York Writing throughout the twentieth century until today. Doing so, we will read a set of representative works from different literary periods (realism/naturalism, modernism and the Harlem Renaissance, postmodernism and contemporary fiction) and explore how writers have developed innovative and distinctive literary techniques in order to engage with and represent the complexities, opportunities, and ambivalences of this city. Doing so, we will acquaint ourselves with different narrative forms and techniques. Students participating in this seminar should be prepared to read at least two novels, selected short stories and excerpts from novels.
