"Aim of the course
The aim of this seminar is to…
•identify and critically engage with various discourses on environmental and social sustainability
•gain a deeper understanding of environmental and social issues and how they intersect and interrelate (e.g. people of lower socio-economic status are affected more by climate change, people in the Global South are affected more by rising temperatures etc.)
•gain an insight into the complexity of these issues (e.g. the different interactions between the Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs)
•work on interdisciplinary research questions

Contents of the course
The course serves as an introduction to national and international discourses on environmental and social issues, thereby giving an overview of the current state of the debate.
Some of the topics covered include but are not limited to:
How did we get into this? The New Age of the Anthropocene: The current state of climate change, planetary boundaries, and inequality (Overview: international developments from the 1970s to today; Climate change: causes and consequences; Planetary boundaries: the bigger picture; Global inequality: the link between ecological and social issues);
Intersectional approach to understand impacts (Sustainable Development, Agenda 2030 and the SDGs);
Impact on the Global South and on disadvantaged groups in our communities (mitigation is not enough – adaptation in these communities more difficult because costly);
International (political) discourse (SDGs - both environmental and social issues, COP21 Paris Agreement), and international (intellectual) discourse (Club of Rome, Pope Francis LS, etc.);
Possible and diverging proposed solutions: different growth paradigms (see Study of SERI Austria), green growth, alternative models of growth (degrowth, postgrowth etc.), alternative concepts “buen vivir” and GNH index;
Complexity on the local level: The “African Farmer” simulation game

The course will involve a great deal of group work, discussions and active participations of the students. The idea is to form different groups who will focus on specific topics and discourses and prepare presentations on these. During the seminar and in the presentation, we will discuss the different proposed solutions and discuss where do they contradict each other and what do they have in common."
