In this course, we will examine the interrelations between distinct media such as literature, film, photography, sound, and digital media. As Marshal McLuhan argues in “The Medium is the Message,” each medium “contains another medium” that involves a particular set of sensory practices (e.g. seeing, listening, reading). We will focus on American cultural artefacts that actively blend different forms of mediality or remediate sound, image, or text into another medium. We will discuss concepts of intermediality, such as adaptation or ekphrasis, and analyze the interplay between visual, auditory, and textual elements on canvas, film, screen, and on the page. Our investigations will be informed by a variety of contemporary theoretical perspectives that draw on literary studies, visual and auditory culture, and media studies.

The reading list contains the novels -The Great Gatsby- by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925),-Plowing the Dark- by Richard Powers (2000), the book -Let Us Now Praise Famous Men- by journalist James Agee and photographer Walker Evans (1941), as well as the graphic novel -March- by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell (2013-2016). Reading at least -The Great Gatsby- (scheduled for week 2) before the official start of the seminar is highly recommended.
