Inhalte/Themen:	In this course, we will explore the main themes and characteristics of the American Renaissance, i.e. the Romantic period that defines the literary and cultural history of the United States before and during the Civil War. From about 1830 to 1865, an emerging interest in the evaluation of democratic values, Westward expansion, and slavery defines American literature. The era also delineates a time when new literary forms¬—such as the novel, the romance, free verse in poetry, and the gothic short story—arise. In our discussions of selected works, we will investigate the historical, literary, and cultural contexts in which American Renaissance writers and thinkers voiced their ideas and concerns. Together, we will read and discuss works of poetry and fiction as well as essays and slave narratives that will allow us to develop an understanding for romanticism, the aesthetics of the sublime, abolitionism, transcendentalism, as well as for the circumstances that fostered the advent of a distinctly national literature.

Literatur:	Among others, the following writers will be discussed in class: Emily Dickinson, Henri David Thoreau, and Sojourner Truth. The reading list also includes the -Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave: Written by Himself- by Frederick Douglass (1845), Nathaniel Hawthorne’s -The Scarlet Letter- (1850), and Margaret Fuller’s -Woman in the Nineteenth Century- (1845). Reading at least one of these works before the official start of the seminar is highly recommended.
