Structural Equation Modeling
Module title (english):
Structural Equation Modeling
Module number:

Level:
Promotion
Course of study:
Type:
Modul
Organising faculty/Language Center:
Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät
Instructors responsible:
Gelbrich, Katja
Examiners:
Credit points (ECTS):
5
competencies/skills:
- In the course of this seminar, participants learn how to analyze linear causal relationships between multiple latent (i.e., not directly measurable) variables.
- At the end of the seminar, participants understand the principle of structural equation modeling (SEM). This knowledge includes construct validation by means of confirmatory factor analysis (i.e., convergent and discriminant validity) as well as analysis of causal relationships and moderating effects.
- Participants obtain the ability to perform structural equation modeling by means of two widely used statistical software applications (i.e., Amos, SmartPLS). Furthermore, they learn to interpret and present the results of these analyses as it is common practice at conferences and in scientific articles.
- After completing the course, participants will be able to correctly judge and interpret scientific articles that report results of structural equation modeling.
course content/topics:
- Why do we use structural equation modeling (SEM)?
- Elementary terms
- Basic theoretical concepts of SEM
- Main principle, application, differentiation, and requirements
- Terms and notations
- Further possibilities of modeling
- Goodness-of-fit measures
- Overview of requirements
- Principle of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)
- Objective and modeling
- Criteria of discriminant validity, convergent validity, goodness-of-fit statistics
- Comparison of SmartPLS and AMOS
- Moderators vs. mediators
- Scale levels: metric vs. non-metric
- Formative vs. reflective constructs
formal requirements of admission:
Knowledge on statistics, preferably on factor analysis and regression analysis
recommended qualifications:
Lehr- und Lernformen/Lehrveranstaltungstypen:
- Tutorial and discussion
- Data analyses using PC
- Presentation
requirements for the attainment of ECTS points:
Students receive a data set along with the task to independently analyze the data with structural equation modeling by using either SmartPLS or Amos. The results have to be presented in front of the instructor and other participants.
workload/distribution of ECTS points within the module:
15 h = Class attendance
55 h = Preparation and follow-up
70 h = Independent work on analyses, documentation, and presentation
140 h = Total workload
calculation of module marks:
